My name is Alfred Rainier Sison, but people here that are close to me actually call me Ray that derived from my middle name. I was born in 1985 in a small town in Illocos Norte, Philippinies. I was six years old when I came to the United States. Entering a new country without any knowledge of the country’s history, or it’s language I was a child who was quite shy and unpopular because of the cultural difference between me and the rest of the children in my class.
Since my only friends were a piece of paper and a pencil I later became known as “the silent kid in the back” As I sat in the back of the class, my initiation to art began. I drew my favorite cartoon characters entertaining myself instead, of interacting with the other kids in class. As my passion for art increased I later became obsessed with the colorful pages of comics. Not only were they appreciated as artistic artwork but as a window of viewing American Lifestyle. From Spiderman to Batman I read them all. The comics helped me increase my capability of reading, writing, and also my drawing ability. Not only did I draw them, I learned what was accepted in the American Society and moral values from what was right and wrong.
As the days passed and the months became years I slowly started adapting to my new environment, and culture. I soon became accepted to the kids in class, especially the ones that shared my interest in art. In elementary school my reputation as “ the silent kid in the back” changed into “the silent kid in the back that can draw real good” . I felt good about that title and soon indulged myself into my art because it was my ticket of being accepted. As my reputation grew and everyone in my elementary school knew of my talent, people started asking me to draw certain things for them, from caricatures of themselves to drawings of flowers and landscapes.
Soon my interest in art was not only my way of being accepted or my therapy from escaping reality but also my downfall to my academics. I have gotten so caught up with my art that little by little I started walking away from my responsibilities of being a student. My honor roll days in elementary school didn’t follow me through my middle school years and high school years.
When I soon started my High School years in Freehold Township High School I made friends easy, coming into the school with a fresh start and already having adapted in the states. I was currently working at Mcdonald’s since I had no transportation it was the only place that was walking distance. I was fourteen and already I was making more money than my friends got from their allowance from their parents. While I was at that job I learned how to work with others and do my job right and take on responsibilities as a leader to those who haven’t worked as long as I have. I held that job for two years during my freshman and sophmore school years.
During my high school years, I was known for being a wrestler with the record of winning 25 wins and only loosing once in my sophmore year, being a running back for my high school football team, being a choregrapher for an event called mulitculutral day, for my acrobetic breakdacing moves, and my artistic talents.
With all those things going on I managed to get a hold of a program called adobe. I started teaching myself, looking for tutorials, asking friends for help, or just playing around. I was astonished in how powerful the program was and the many things you could do with it. I fell in love with it. I wanted to pursue my new interest in the future so I asked my counsler what I could do. He persuaded me to take a two year course in a Vocational School in Communication Design in Wall Township. I fell in love with the class, and forced myself to excel over everyone else in class. I wanted to be the best. I graduated from my Freehold Township High School in 2003 and also graduated from Wall Township Visual Communication High School walking away with two diploma’s and also walking away with an award with the best Portfolio in my school.
I am now currently in Brookdale Community College majoring in graphic design and again I want to excel my passion for art and graphics into your school. I want know my potential since my Vocational Teacher Mrs. Sobko recommended your school so highly. A lot of my friends also attended your school and graduated and had a clear future to where they want to go into the world. I hope one day I will be roaming your hallways and be part of my history of passion in art and design.
